Drepung is one of the “great three” Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It’s located at the foot of Mount Gephel in the vicinity of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
The monastery was founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa school.
Drepung Monastery was the largest and most powerful of the Gelugpa monasteries, and it played a significant role in the religious and political life of Tibet. At its peak, it housed around 10,000 monks.
The monastery served as a center for learning, producing many important religious and political leaders, including the Dalai Lamas.
It houses many precious relics, scriptures, and art. The monastery’s buildings are traditional Tibetan architecture. As it’s all wood, there are fire fighter 🧑🚒 equipment everywhere.
