Leopard Seals and Suicidal Penguins in Hope Bay, Antarctica
Very brave or slightly suicidal penguins (?) playing around our sleepy and full leopard seal. The penguins are adorable. One ran around the seal. Another jumped up on the ice, only to see the seal, and drop back down again immediately. In the background is the Argentinean station where Argentine brought a pregnant women to make sure the first child born in Antartica was Argentinean for them to somehow claim land here. Good thing both mother and child survived! Since then a total of 13 babies of Argentinean and Chilean nationality have been born here for this reason. We were not allowed to go ashore to the Argentinean station. The Antarctic seem to be a very important one for peace, climate and research here.
